Well, (said Hetty).
What a busy few days it has been and what a lot we have learnt.
How hard can it be to move a horsebox 1m so you can open the ramp and not hit the shed. Jolly hard is the answer. You know you see movies with the tense moments as someone puts two cables together to try and get something to stop or start? Well, Dave had to crawl between Hetty and a hedge (believe me when I tell you you end up getting up close and personal with the hedge) and practice his wiring skills whilst I tried repeatedly to get Hetty going. Shouting words of encouragement as I turned the key didn’t seem to do the trick. You know what they say, 23rd time lucky! It started. Hoorah. Since the largest thing I have driven is a Luton box van, and our driveway is not much wider than Hetty, I was a tad nervous as I put it into what we hoped was first gear. Success! I drove Hetty about 1m in a forwards direction. Just give me a my certificate of achievement now please.
Saturday saw us stripping out most of the inside of Hetty and relocating it to our driveway, shed and garden, in my hair, up my fingernails, in Dave’s beard and Lord only knows where else.
Dave’s son, Jakey was with us this weekend and when he wasn’t hurling himself onto the grass from the door or stabbing polystrene with a screwdriver, he proved to be a sterling little helper clearing away the rubbish and bits we are putting to one side for ‘possible reuse’.
The dogs were most interested in what was going on. Scrabble sampled some old horse poo she found and Koda was keen to try and help out where she could.
We downed tools around 5pm on Saturday, having felt like we had achieved a lot.
Sunday saw a later start on work, since Scrabble had a trip to the vets booked in the morning and we had some other things that needed doing first. We had seen some flies when we had looked at the van, but today they were ready to do battle as we started to dismantle the walls. For the record, they did not taste nice, with or without the fly spray topping. Holly arrived home to help for a bit today but seemed to get the most enjoyment filming me jumping out of the way of sparks from the angle grinder. The day came to an end with us bringing out the big guns to get rid of the flies once and for all….. we shall not be defeated.
Monday found Dave having to take an unexpected day off work, as Scrabble needed to visit her favourite place again this morning having been starved since midnight. Neither of them were happy when they left the house at 930. They were home by lunchtime and Dave decided to carry on doing some more work on Hetty. Scrabble decided to spend the day woofing. Dave removed the side skirts today and made great inroads into removing the floor. We are started to get to the point where we are discovering things that need replacing that we hoped we wouldn’t, including my lower back.
